Hay is located on the banks of the picturesque Murrumbidgee River and surrounded by the vast open Hay Plains, at the junction of the Sturt, Cobb and Mid-Western Highways. Hay's history is rich with characters and tales of boom and bust - of isolation and innovation. It is in the centre of some of the flattest country on earth. With a population of 3500, Hay is home to five museums, including Shear Outback: The Australian Shearers' Hall of Fame.

    1. Chinatown Night Markets See Sydney’s bustling, exciting Chinatown light up every Friday night on Dixon Street for the Chinatown Night Markets.

    1. Hay Nature Walk The Hay Nature Walk runs along the northern side of the Murrumbidgee River. Picnic areas are located along the walking track to allow people to sit and enjoy the tranquillity of the river, to have a picnic, or to simply take a rest.
    2. Hay Prisoner of War and Internment Camp Interpretive Centre Housed in two railway carriages, the museum tells the story of the camps in Hay where the 'Dunera boys', and Japanese and Italian prisoners of war, were held during World War II. Photographs, exhibits and music bring the experiences of the townsfolk and the internees to life. The Interpretive Centre exhibits are displayed in two restored train carriages at the Hay Railway Station.

    1. Cobb And Co Coach Display Hay has strong associations with the famous Cobb & Co coach company.
    2. Dunera Memorial The Dunera Memorial was raised to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of European internees, known as "The Dunera Boys". The internees - German and Austrian nationals had escaped from Nazi persecution to Great Britain. Many were young men studying in England. They were interned and transported on "H.M.T. Dunera", arriving at Darling Harbour and placed on trains then sent to Hay. During their 9 months in Hay they set up a university, a symphony orchestra and printed their own currency. After 9 months they moved to Tatura and eventually released.
    3. Dunera Museum Located in two train carriages on the Hay Railway Station platform, the Dunera Museum - Hay Internment and POW Camps Interpretive Centre houses exhibits that document the history of the three Internment and POW Camps sited at Hay during WWII.
    4. Hay Gaol Museum A diverse collection of artefacts showcasing the history of Hay is displayed in the buildings and ground of the old Hay Gaol. The complex has had many uses since it was built in 1878: gaol, maternity hospital, lock hospital for the insane, Prisoner of War detention centre, Institute for Girls and now museum.
    5. Hay Heritage Walk The Hay Heritage Walk is situated in a one block precinct of the Hay Visitor's Centre in Moppett Street, call in for a map of the walk and details.
    6. Sturts Marked Tree The bronze plaque on Sturts Marked Tree indicates the trail taken by Captain Charles Sturt on his epic journey down the Murrumbidgee River in 1829.
    7. Witcombe Fountain The Witcombe Fountain was a gift to the people of Hay from Mayor John Witcombe in 1883. Mayor Witcombe served five terms in office, and was a member of the family responsible for building many of Hay's older buildings.

    1. Hay Sunset Viewing Area The Hay Sunset Viewing Area is a must for the artist, photographer or those who have never seen a real sunset. Unhindered by tall buildings or smog, the traveller can delight in the magnificence of the sun going down. The full spectrum of colours is present as the sun sets over the plains.
    2. Hay Weir The Hay Weir (Also known as Johnston Park) is located approximately 15km from Hay on the Maude Road. Facilities available include BBQ, picnic area and toilets. The Hay Weir is also an extremely popular fishing spot, where fisherman have been known to catch Murray Cod up to 70 pounds in weight!
